Children in Early Years (Reception and Nursery classes) follow the statutory Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum.
Our phonics scheme follows Schofield & Sims My Letters and Sounds. Children start early phonics within our Nursery as they investigate environmental sounds. Once they begin Reception, children follow a more formal approach to phonics and this is continued into Year 1. In the Summer term, Year 1 children are assessed using the national phonics screening test. Phonics continues to be a focus in Year 2. We expect all of our children to have a secure understanding of phonics by the time they reach KS2. If this is not the case, then they will receive further support.
Nonsuch Primary School’s Curriculum
We have created our curriculum in line with the National Curriculum 2014. Please read our curriculum intent. Details of the learning taking place in each year group is accessible by clicking on one of the year group shortcuts below.
If you would like more information about any aspect of our curriculum, please speak to your child's class teacher or alternatively, speak to the school office who will put you in touch with the relevant curriculum coordinator.
The Organisation of the Curriculum
Children in Key Stage 1 and 2 have a daily mathematics and English lesson ensuring coverage of the national curriculum objectives. At Nonsuch Primary School we place great value on children participating in a broad and balanced curriculum. We aim to create a stimulating environment in which children are actively engaged in their own learning. We try to give children valuable first-hand and relevant experience by making links between subjects wherever possible. Curriculum maps are available for each year group, including EYFS, in the links below.
We follow the government curriculum for RSE. Click on this link for an overview of what is taught in each year group.
Reading
At Nonsuch, we believe that reading is the cornerstone of a child's education. We are committed to fostering a love of books and the written word, understanding that strong reading skills are essential for academic success and lifelong learning. Through our comprehensive reading programs, engaging library resources, and regular storytelling sessions, we encourage every student to explore the joys of reading. We support our pupils in becoming confident, enthusiastic readers, helping them to unlock their potential and open doors to new worlds of knowledge and imagination.
Writing
We place great emphasis on the importance of writing as a fundamental skill that empowers our students to express their thoughts, ideas, and creativity. We strive to nurture confident writers through a well-rounded curriculum that encourages imaginative storytelling, clear communication, and thoughtful reflection. From the early stages of learning to write, we provide our pupils with the tools and guidance they need to develop strong writing skills, which are essential for their academic journey and beyond. Through regular writing exercises, creative projects, and personalised feedback, we help our students find their unique voice and communicate effectively in a variety of contexts.
Maths
At Nonsuch, we recognise the vital role that maths plays in developing critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and logical reasoning. We are committed to providing a strong foundation in mathematics through engaging, hands-on learning experiences that make abstract concepts tangible and understandable for our students. By incorporating concrete learning tools, such as manipulatives and real-world examples, we ensure that our pupils not only grasp mathematical principles but also see their relevance in everyday life. Our approach fosters a deep understanding of maths, encouraging confidence and curiosity as students build the skills needed for future success in both academics and daily challenges.
History
History is all around us. The study of history ignites children’s curiosity about the past in Britain and the wider world. Through finding out about how and why the world, our country, culture and local community have developed over time, children understand how the past influences the present. History enables children to develop a context for their growing sense of identity and a chronological framework for their knowledge of significant events and people. What they learn through history can influence their decisions about personal choices, attitudes and values. At NPS, our intent, when teaching history, is to stimulate the children’s curiosity in order for them to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding. We are in close proximity to Nonsuch Mansion and use this as part of our Y3 Tudors topic.
Art
The Art curriculum is designed to inspire creativity and cultural awareness by introducing students to a diverse range of contemporary artists. We emphasise the importance of exploring various artistic styles and techniques while learning about artists from different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. This approach not only enriches students' understanding of the art world but also promotes inclusivity and respect for diversity, helping them appreciate the beauty and value of different perspectives in today's global society.
Design and technology
In our Design & Technology (D&T) curriculum, we focus on developing essential skills that empower students to think creatively and solve real-world problems. Through hands-on projects, students learn to design, build, and evaluate their own creations, fostering critical thinking, teamwork, and resilience. Our approach emphasises the importance of practical skills, from understanding materials and tools to applying principles of design and engineering. By building these foundational skills, we prepare students to confidently tackle challenges and innovate in an ever-evolving world.
French
In Key Stage 2, our French language curriculum aims to build strong communication skills, cultural understanding, and a love for languages. Through engaging lessons, students develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing abilities in French, laying a solid foundation for future language learning. We chose French because it is widely spoken around the world.
Geography
In our Geography curriculum, we adhere to the National Curriculum while ensuring a strong connection to our local area, including Stoneleigh, Cheam and Nonsuch. We incorporate fieldwork to help students explore and understand their immediate surroundings through hands-on experiences. By integrating local studies with broader geographical concepts, we aim to deepen students’ understanding of both their local environment and the wider world, fostering a practical and engaging approach to learning about geography.
Religious Education
Our Religious Education (RE) curriculum is designed to foster understanding, respect, and reflection on the diverse beliefs and values that shape our world. Based on Sutton's Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education (SCRE), our scheme encourages students to explore a wide range of religions and worldviews, developing their ability to think critically and empathetically. Through engaging lessons, students learn about different faiths, traditions, and moral questions, helping them appreciate the rich diversity of beliefs in our society and beyond. This approach not only broadens their knowledge but also promotes tolerance and mutual respect.
Physical Education
For Physical Education we follow the Real PE scheme, which focuses on five core areas: Personal, Social, Creative, Health and Fitness, Cognitive, and Physical development. We have tailored this scheme to meet our unique needs, prioritising depth of learning and building on key principles rather than covering a broad range of activities. Our students benefit from positive role models through expert sports coaches for running (Real Runners) and tennis. Additionally, our membership with the Sutton Schools Sports Partnership provides access to a variety of sporting events. Being a smaller school allows us to offer more opportunities for each child to actively participate in year group events, ensuring a rich and inclusive PE experience.
Music
At Nonsuch, we are proud to implement the Charanga scheme for Music, which prioritises both skill development and a deep passion for music. As part of each pupil's musical journey, our programme includes dedicated ukulele and drumming tuition for two year groups. This hands-on approach allows students to develop practical skills and fully engage with their learning, enriching their overall musical experience. Additionally, we hold a Music Appreciation Assembly for KS1 - KS2 inj which we introduce the chidlren to a range of different music styles and genres. Through these enriching experiences, we aim to foster a lifelong love for music, helping each child to build confidence and creativity.
